A Comparison in Directors

Looking into different styles of music videos I have found that two distinct directors who have both made music videos for the ‘alternative’ genre before, the two directors I will be comparing are Daniel “cloud” Campo responsible for videos such as ‘Emperor’s new clothes’ (2015) and ‘This is Gospel’ (2013) by Panic! At the disco as well as ‘Salt’ (2014). This directors style of work will be compared to the work of Neil Krug a director responsible for two of the music video for the band Glass Animals: ‘Youth’ (2016) and Life Itself also in (2016).

Daniel “cloud” Campos style of video can be described as mostly continuous this seems to

be what he is most comfortable with. Minimal cuts and lots of camera movement, with all actions happening in one place this makes for an interesting video that is good for story-driven video. His videos also tend to shy away from hard cuts and use lighting to fade out of scenes so that they can smoothly blend together so even when the actors need to do something more time to consume between shots such as a costume change that can be blended in smoothly. This can be seen in ‘Emperor’s new clothes’ as the Make-up gets progressively applied between the quick flashes of black. To try and recreate this style a lot of space would be needed to be able to set any of the props in the scene this area would most likely have to be very dark to try and recreate the lighting effect used in most of the work that only shows the main characters and props of a scene. On top of this to try and pull off all the different roles and allow the shoot to go smoothly.

Neil Krug’s videos are also story driven but use more cuts than Daniel. His videos are also slightly more abstract using more symbolism such as the narrative over his two Glass Animals Videos that can be interpreted however the viewer would like which is more conventional of an alternative genre music videos. This style of video would be much easier to replicate as it would not need as much equipment for lighting or as much space. These videos also include some Steadicam usage that I would also like to try and include in my own music video to make the shots more interesting to watch.

From these videos, I have decided that a mostly continuous feeling video would be best especially with a slower song such as Glass Animals ‘Hazy’, however, a few cuts possibly to beats of the song would help to tie the video and song together. A fully continuous music video may be difficult to film smoothly and look professional, to avoid shakey and awkward looking shots practice with the Steadicams would be necessary.
